Brown Bagging Has A New Meaning
Many of us are tired of the high fats, sugars, and salts that we get in our fast food restaurants. And we are going back to packing our own lunches for work. Here are ten easy tips to give your lunchbag a nutrition makeover:
1) Choose lower fat milk, yogurt, cheese, and other dairy products for your lunch
2) Use low fat or cheeses on your sandwiches and salads to get your extra proteins and fats.
3) Use low fat meats for your sandwiches and salads. Read your labels. The freshly sliced meats from the deli are a good choice as well.
4) At least one serving of fruit should be in your lunch bag. Go with fresh as much as possible. But in its own juices if from a can. Bring some yogurt along, and combined with your fruit, could be a quick fulfilling snack.
5) Think of creative ways to add more vegetables in your lunch. Make some lettuce wraps, have sliced vegetables always ready in your refrigerator, so you can pack those in your lunch bag. Add last nights leftover roasted vegetables, or have some extra vegetables on your salad or sandwich.
6) Whole grain breads, crackers, and cereals only. Dont pack any of the processed, bleached products in your lunch bag.
7) Limit the prepackaged sweet treats. They are full of sugar, saturated and trans fats. Bake a healthier vegetable loaf (carrot cake, zucchini bread, banana bread, etc.) And take couple of thin slices in your lunch bag. Or go with fruit as an alternative altogether.
8) Pack more raw fruits and vegetables and limit the chips. You will get that healthy crunch, and feel full until your next meal.
9) Read your labels on your juices. It should tell you if its 100% real juice or not. . . which is what your preference should be. The other well known brands of juice drinks are full of sugar with a touch of juice.
10) Make your own "lunchables" . . . pack your favorite low fat lunch meat, whole grain crackers, and fresh fruit in a sectioned container with a lid. The sectioned containers are readily found these days in Walmart, Target, etc. Add a box or bottle of 100% juice and you are well on your way to a healthier "brown bag" lunch.
